  Cappadocia oasis: a teahouse experience

CAPPADOCIA — A WORLD-CLASS LANDSCAPE

Located in the heart of Anatolia, in central Türkiye, Cappadocia boasts one of the world’s most unique geological and cultural landscapes. The region encompasses areas such as Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, and Avanos, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 in recognition of the exceptional relationship between its natural formations, rock-cut architecture, and cultural heritage.
Millions of years ago, volcanic activity from Erciyes and Hasan Dağı covered the region with vast deposits of ash and volcanic rock. Over time, water and wind eroded these layers of tuff, creating the valleys, plateaus, canyons, and distinctive “fairy chimneys” that define Cappadocia.
The local population took advantage of the nature of this rock to carve out dwellings, churches, monasteries, and underground cities, seamlessly integrating architecture and geology within the landscape.
Cappadocia has a continental climate, featuring cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers. Spring and autumn offer particularly favorable conditions for exploring the landscape, while tourism peaks between late spring and early autumn.
Today, Cappadocia attracts visitors from around the world drawn by hiking, horseback riding, off-road excursions, underground cities, and historical sites. Hot-air balloon rides over the valleys at sunrise have become one of the region’s most iconic experiences. Above all, Cappadocia is a landscape to be explored, admired, and experienced—a place where any new intervention must acknowledge the terrain itself as the primary element.

TURKISH TEA — A CULTURAL RITUAL

Tea is deeply embedded in Turkish daily life and social culture. Served throughout the day in the characteristic çay bardağı, its preparation and sharing are associated with hospitality, conversation and moments of pause. In a landscape as extraordinary as Cappadocia, this tradition offers a natural connection between Turkish culture and the idea of a contemporary Tea House—a place where architecture becomes part of the experience of pausing and enjoying the landscape.

THE SITE. RED VALLEY — KIZILÇUKUR

Red Valley, known locally as Kızılçukur, is one of Cappadocia’s most recognizable landscapes. Its volcanic rock formations—featuring shades of red, pink, and ochre—create a particularly spectacular vista during the final hours of the day, making it a prime destination for watching the sunset in the region.
Access to Red Valley is possible via lower trails or directly from the road leading to the upper viewpoints. The latter option allows visitors to reach the ridge itself and is especially popular at sunset, when the area draws large numbers of visitors and tour vehicles.
The site proposed for “Cappadocia Oasis” sits atop two small natural plateaus that are separated by the road yet visually linked. Plateau A (1,400 m²) and Plateau B (1,100 m²)—with the former serving as the primary intervention area—are oriented toward Red Valley. This positioning establishes a direct connection with the rock formations and the valley skyline, making it the ideal location for the Tea House’s core experience.

On the other side of the road lies Plateau B, which will function primarily as a transition space for those arriving at the project via the road—whether by tourist transport, private vehicle, on foot, or on organized tours. It can also serve as a vantage point for viewing the landscape and engaging in tourism activities.
The site is situated within an active tourism area, close to hiking trails, viewpoints, and adventure routes. Existing parking and arrival areas in the vicinity can serve as supporting infrastructure.

GENERAL PURPOSE

To create a tea house experience in Cappadocia that connects visitors to the landscape through relaxation, gastronomy, and contemplation.
Cappadocia Oasis is envisioned as a small, contemporary retreat integrated into the Red Valley landscape, where architecture, nature, and the visitor experience form a continuous journey. The proposal must include a main tea house featuring dining service areas, spaces for rest and contemplation, courtyards and gardens, and a terrace facing the landscape. Across the road, a second plateau will serve as an arrival and transition point, incorporating only lightweight infrastructure and a landmark element that establishes a visual and conceptual link to the main project.
Proposals are expected to explore an architecture that is sensitive and low-scale, maintaining a strong connection to the land and creating a memorable experience without competing with Cappadocia’s unique geology. The project must prioritize views, pedestrian paths, shade, water, vegetation, and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, treating the landscape as the true protagonist.
