Vernacular AI Architecture

Welcome to the Vernacular AI Architecture 2026 competition, proudly hosted by Archibest. Under the theme "Where Heritage Meets Intelligence," this competition serves as a global platform exploring the intersection of traditional architectural heritage and artificial intelligence. We invite forward-thinking designers, architects, and students to rethink how local contexts and historical vernaculars can be reimagined using cutting-edge AI tools to create the architecture of tomorrow.
Opportunity
This competition is your chance to showcase your innovative workflow to the world. Participants will compete for a Total Prize Pool of $6,000, distributed across top placements and a dedicated Student Award. Beyond the financial reward, the winners and 10 Honorable Mentions will receive massive international recognition. Your work will be featured on Archibest’s platforms—reaching an audience of over 900K followers—and published in several prestigious international architecture and design magazines. Furthermore, your submissions will be evaluated by an esteemed jury panel featuring industry leaders and computational experts from world-renowned firms, including Zaha Hadid Architects, BIG, Foster + Partners, and [MC] STUDIOS.
Challenge
The core design task is to design a contemporary building using AI as a primary design tool to reinterpret local or vernacular architecture. You are tasked with proposing a buildable project. Suitable typologies include, but are not limited to:
A cultural center
A community hub
A library
A pavilion
Low-rise housing
The challenge lies in bridging the gap between algorithmic generation and tangible reality. Your design must not be a mere visual output, but a thoughtful integration of cultural heritage and modern intelligence.
Competition site
There is no fixed site for this competition. Participants are granted the creative freedom to choose or imagine any location – whether real or speculative. However, the selected site must strongly relate to a specific vernacular or local architectural tradition that informs your design approach. Your proposal must demonstrate a clear connection to the context, climate, and cultural background of your chosen place. You are expected to visually and textually explain how these local factors actively shape your architectural concept.
