National Slavery Museum in Amsterdam

The City of Amsterdam is working with the National Slavery Museum Foundation on the establishment of a National Slavery Museum in Amsterdam. This will give lasting expression to the recognition of the Dutch history of slavery. We invite teams from around the world to take part in the design competition for both the building and the park.
The museum will be a meaningful place for reflection, education and connection. A place that does justice to our shared past and offers prospects for future generations. With the history of transatlantic slavery as its central point of reference, the museum will also address other histories of slavery, such as those of the Indian Ocean region. The National Slavery Museum will tell stories of resistance, resilience and connection.
What are we looking for?
A design team comprising an architect and a landscape architect, supplemented by (early-career) designers, historians or contextual experts from other disciplines.
The competition concerns the development of an integrated design for the park (25,000 m²) and the museum building (9,000 m²).
The team should represent diverse communities and have a personal relationship with the history of slavery in the Netherlands.
In addition to the design team, the City will appoint a local engineering team to carry out the technical development of the design.
Requirements
The building of the National Slavery Museum is more than just a building: its appearance must do justice to its exceptional purpose, in terms of architecture, expression, materials, form and setting. For the recognition of the history of slavery, a dignified and meaningful building is therefore required. A building that houses and conveys the full story of the Dutch history of slavery in different ways. A building that is easily accessible and occupies a prominent location.
