The Field Station – Architecture Competition

The Field Station

This innovative research center will be the heart of the vision: a Field Station that serves as a meeting ground for novelty, learning and environmental responsibility.
Participants are invited to design a campus that not only enables high-level research but also becomes a prototype for resilient, site-sensitive architecture.
The structure must respond to its setting: low-lying wetlands, tidal forces and the ever-present risk of sea-level rise demand solutions that are adaptable, regenerative and deeply rooted in the surrounding ecosystem.
The Field Station should be designed not as a barrier against nature, but as an active participant within it: floating, shifting or even retreating as the land and waters evolve. This is a place where architecture is both host and habitat, combining sustainable technologies with natural systems.
From green roofs that support pollinators to materials that weather with dignity, the center must reflect a long-term vision of coexistence. More than a building, it should be a landscape-aware structure: prepared for change and built to inspire those who will study, work and live within its walls.

The Competition

Participants are challenged to conceive an innovative R&D Field Station supporting the coexistence of multiple disciplines and uses.
From its earliest sketches, the design should emphasize versatility and integration, offering a dynamic blend of interior, exterior and transitional spaces where interaction and innovation can flourish.
The program must address the needs of a broad user base: students, researchers, professionals and creatives, all by offering a mix of formal and informal areas.
Think beyond conventional layouts: how can a lab open into a marshland? How might a lecture space double as a social amphitheater? How can mobile partitions be used to enlarge or reduce spaces as needed?
The goal is not only to shelter activity, but to shape it. Designers are free to define the form, organization and construction systems of their proposals.
Whether composed of modular volumes, elevated decks or floating pavilions, the project should interpret the unique character of the Shenk Property while allowing for phased development, environmental sensitivity and long-term adaptability. Connectivity to both land and water routes will be seen as a valuable asset.
