In 2024, Nepal endured one of its most devastating monsoon seasons in decades. Floods and landslides ravaged infrastructure and claimed hundreds of lives. Over 150 schools were destroyed, leaving countless children without safe learning environments. This crisis was compounded by the Tibet earthquake on January 7, 2025, which further weakened buildings and hampered recovery efforts.
In response, Archstorming, in collaboration with Karmayog Foundation Nepal and Nepal Rising, launches the Nepal School Project. We seek innovative, replicable, and earthquake-resistant school designs that provide both a secure space for education and a vital community hub during emergencies.
The Competition: Designing a Replicable School Model
We invite architects, designers, and students from around the world to propose a prototype school that can be replicated in multiple rural locations in Nepal. The design must be:
Flood-resistant design: Raised foundations to combat monsoon flooding.
Earthquake-Resilient: Able to withstand seismic activity common in the region.
Eco-Friendly: Incorporating sustainable materials, passive design features, and renewable energy solutions.
Modular: Easily constructed in phases, adaptable for future expansions, and feasible for varying budgets and community needs.
Community-Centric: Serving as both a safe educational environment and a refuge for families during emergencies.
