Initiative
Arch Hive is committed to offering emerging architectural talent the opportunity to design and present innovative projects, challenging each year’s winners to develop original designs for a temporary, outdoor installation at various sites around the globe. This year, Arch Hive has partnered with Wesgroup to prepared this document for the purpose of arranging the following competition.

About Wesgroup
Wesgroup has grown to become one of Western Canada’s largest private real estate companies. Our operations are vertically integrated, encompassing construction, land acquisition, finance, design, leasing, marketing, sales, and property management. All activities are handled in house. Our focus is growing our Income-Producing Property portfolio, which is located primarily in Metro Vancouver.

Theme: Pavilion For Change
Pavilions are not just structures; they are transformative elements within public spaces that have the power to shape our urban environments, create memorable experiences, and foster a sense of community. The jury are searching for innovative projects that use design to refresh the current pedestrian experience, bringing them a new found sense of belonging and placemaking. Winning entries will be put forward for consideration for construction as well as receiving a share of the $20,000 prize fund.

About Surrey
Surrey is a city in British Columbia, Canada. It is located south of the Fraser River on the Canada–United States border. It is a member municipality of the Metro Vancouver regional district and metropolitan area. Surrey is the province’s second-largest by population after Vancouver and the third-largest by area after Abbotsford and Prince George.

At the epicenter of the development is the Civic Plaza, comprised of several key infrastructure and amenities. With the introduction of these civic elements, the civic plaza has seen an influx of young students and families in the recent years.

Entrants are requested to design an iconic installation that will revitalize the corner facing the South East of Civic Plaza. The work should attract pedestrian traffic and improve the vibrancy of the street. The panel will look favorably upon works that encourage conversation and sharing on media.

Design Criteria
  • The design can be a purely artistic installation or have interactive elements such as a photozone. Participants are encouraged to be creative in fostering interaction and vibrancy
  • The work must be easily accessible to all passersby safely regardless of their age and ability
  • Conscious choice of material to ensure longevity and maintainability of the pavilion
  • It should withstand natural elements such as rain and snow
  • The expected life time of the work is up to 12 months
  • Prevent undesirable usage such as sleeping, vandalism, skateboarding, etc
  • There would be no power or utilities available. Installations should not propose use of electricity or fire
  • Design must provision a surface on which organizers and participating stakeholders, including the designers

Submission Requirements
The competition is open to all. No professional qualification is required. All submissions must be entered on Arch Hive website. Correspondence with organizers must be conducted in English; All information submitted by participants must be in English.

Design proposals can be developed individually. Entrants must submit architectural projects which have not been built. Projects must include minimum of 1 image per submission. Arch Hive will be providing necessary resources to construct the project.

Jury
Jury members shall under no circumstances be contacted by competition participants or their representatives. Participants who attempt to contact jury members, shall be disqualified. All jury members are involved in the evaluation based on their availability at that time. All communication regarding the competition should only be carried out with Arch Hive staff.
