We invite architects, landscape designers, and environmental enthusiasts to participate in this set of competitions to restore an abandoned stone quarry and contribute to the healing of this industrial scar on our world’s natural landscape. Your innovative designs can breathe new life into the site, making it a symbol of environmental restoration and conservation.
The primary goal is to revitalise the site by encouraging native ecosystems and habitats to return, while creating a harmonious coexistence between nature and humans using one, or all, of our three competition briefs, outlining the design for a Concert Hall, a full Revitalising Landscaping proposal and a Biophilic Pavillion, all located within the quarry of your choice.
For all of our quarry competitions, you have the option to choose your own site location or one of the site locations that we have provided.
If you are choosing your own site, it must be a disused, open stone quarry that has had no post industrial intervention, or a quarry that is currently in use and will benefit from your proposal once the material extraction has been exhausted. If you have a site in mind but are unsure whether it is suitable, you can contact us via [email protected] and we would be very happy to discuss this with you.
We have provided the option to use one of three different stone quarries from around the United Kingdom, located in protected Natural Parks. You may select any one of these sites to use as the basis of your project. Our Site Analysis Package includes 3D topography and Photographs of each of the sites.
Disused quarries can have a detrimental effect on the landscape, destroying large areas of natural habitats. Your objective for these projects is to create a detailed proposal for the revitalisation of a quarry that can act as a catalyst to encourage similar interventions worldwide, with an emphasis on sustainable design, wildlife conservation and a comprehensive landscaping scheme with native flora.
