  Landgut 2050 - networked · mobile · digital

The German federal state of Thuringia is a predominantly rural region of small-scale, scattered settlements and no large cities. 90% of all municipalities in Thuringia have fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, and every third person lives in one of these small communities. The focus of this competition is therefore not the cities but the future of a rural region and the future of small towns and rural communities in Thuringia, and with it of the other many similar regions throughout Europe.

The title »Landgut 2050« refers to the positive potential of living in rural areas, and ‘2050 networked · mobile · digital’ to the specific demands of the present and of the future which typically have little to do with rustic clichés or the idealised notions of city dwellers looking to move to the countryside.

The competition aims to address key issues of structural and social development in rural communities in the context of current demographic trends, such as shrinking and ageing rural populations. These include ecological and social challenges as well as the potentials of digitalisation.

The competition focuses on three similar-sized rural locations in Thuringia – Lauscha, Stützerbach and Urleben – that exhibit typical structural deficits for which ideas are sought. Proposals should made for a site within the respective municipality that has the potential to trigger innovative developments with a wider impact. As a catalyst for future development, they should be not just a place to live but also a living environment. The objective is to develop proposals that are well-connected, climate friendly, efficient in their use of resources while at the same time being neighbourly, supportive, affordable, economically viable and accommodating of the needs of all generations.

The competition is aimed at the following professional disciplines:

architecture, design, art, civil engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, urban and regional planning, social planning, sociology, philosophy and traffic planning.

A combination of at least two disciplines is recommended. The jury comprises experts from an interdisciplinary professional spectrum and accordingly suitably interdisciplinary proposals are sought.

The competition is organised in the context of the »Plattform Wohndebatte« as a means of promoting the debate on fundamental questions about living and housing.

The deadline for submission of design proposals (also online) is 12 October 2020.
