Founders’ Memorial Competition

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong first mentioned a Founders’ Memorial in Parliament on 15 April 2015. He spoke of having a memorial to honour the legacy of our founding generation of leaders, to strengthen Singaporeans’ sense of solidarity, and to inspire future generations to reflect on the ideals and values upon which our nation is built.
A project was initiated to gather views from the public and to conceptualise a memorial that would resonate with Singaporeans. More than 30,000 Singaporeans shared their ideas and hopes for the memorial over two years. The vision and concept expressed in these pages have been distilled from focus group discussions, visioning workshops and other engagements, as well as a public showcase.
Singaporeans wish this Founders’ Memorial to be a unifying point for all Singaporeans – a space that reflects our national identity, our values and strengths. Our story is of an unexpected nation that defied the odds, that made difficult choices for our people to not just survive, but to succeed into the future. How do we capture the spirit of those times, of pressing forward amid difficult circumstances, to inspire future generations?
Some specific desired aspects from the earlier consultations include a park-like setting, located near water, to encourage reflection and recreation, and an indoor venue with interpretive and educational material. The site chosen at Bay East Garden, with an inspiring vista of the evolving skyline, presents very exciting opportunities to integrate these ideas.
The Founders’ Memorial will be like no other structure or site. It will bring together Singaporeans and complement other institutions in narrating our nation’s heritage, taking important lessons from our past while looking to our future.
This two-stage architectural competition seeks the best design – one that will honour the founding values of this nation and make best use of the site. In the first stage of the competition, entry teams will be kept anonymous. We welcome teams from all countries and backgrounds, of different size and experience, to submit their design ideas and concepts. A jury panel would then shortlist the teams to go on to a second stage, from which the winning design will be selected.
We look forward to a design that will bring to life the hopes and wishes that Singaporeans have expressed for their Founders’ Memorial, and warmly invite you to submit your design proposal for this landmark project.
