Historical Meets Contemporary. Redesigning a Unesco heritage Art Nouveau building to match the vision of today’s public institution.

The School is located in the very center of Riga, in an Art Nouveau complex designed by architect E. von Irmer and constructed in 1912 as a rental building. In the 20s and 30s of the twentieth cen-tury, the building housed the German Classical Grammar School, the 9th German Boys’ Basic School, the Riga State School of Ap-plied Arts, the Latvian Association of German-Baltic Teachers as well as flats of some prominent Latvian politicians, writers and composers. Later on the building was used for the Riga State Mu-sic School, the Riga State Arts School, Latvian Folklore Reposito-ry, Latvian Language Repository and Central Pedagogical Library. In the 70s and 80s, the building housed the Riga Student Clinic and since 2000 it has been home to the Riga Business School. With the growing number of students and further development of its programs, the School plans to utilise all the complex for its needs and thus has committed to transform it into a building suitable for an urban school that has a modern outlook while valu-ing rich history. The total floor area of the existing complex is 8350 sq.m and additional construction in certain places is pos-sible. Necessary room inventory and suggested areas for further construction are listed below in the competition package.
The aim of the competition is to acquire a high quality inno-vative architectural ideas for the development of RBS build-ing. The subject of the competition is an architectural draft for the RBS facility that reflects the needs of all the programs and takes into account both the modern construction trends and the necessity to preserve the UNESCO historical architectural her-itage. Access for the physically challenged and a bicycle park-ing facility should be ensured.
