Yuri Vissarionov’s architectural studio presented the project of a retail centre located at the entrance to Novgorod from Moscow. Keeping in mind that it will be constructed for Veliki Novgorod, the architects charged the building with Old Russian allusions.
The retail centre designed for the local furniture factory “Elegiya” - functionally it is a large furniture mall - will be located on the outskirts of Novgorod, on Moscow street, the entrance for tourists and rest admirers of the Old Russian antiquity. Anyone walking from Moscow direction first will be surprised by the huge letters “Veliky Novgorod859” and then from the right side – by the glass-metal parallelepipeds of Dirol gum factory. Opposite to the factory, to the right from the road there will be constructed the furniture centre (later there will be constructed a retail and pubic centre, the second part of the project) - which along with the "Elegiya" mall will be meeting visitors and will be their first impression of the city. Visually it consists of 5 volumes have grown into each other and formed a plan with broken outline, resembling a boomerang.
One of the two central volumes, located at the imaginary “bend” and most visible from the highway is designed like a huge 3storey showcase, and the second is a white stone block with numerous windows of different shape - horizontal, vertical, square, large and small - scattered randomly and asymmetrically. A large number of them are on the roof and illuminate the atrium which on a sunny day will be covered with large rectangles of daylight. Some of the windows cut the joint of walls and roofs, intentionally lacking the eave, emphasizing integrity of the perforated bulk. The both blocks, glass and stone, widening upwards, in fact there are few strictly vertical and even strictly horizontal (except for the floor, of course)lines - each plane trying to display the character and slightly lean. The two main volumes are supported by the third – the vertical narrow prism glass and most high staircase around the entire complex, it marks its most crucial point like a flag-pole or a command bridge (which is true because near it and over there will appear a conference hall and administration). To complete the effect the sugar-glass core is framed by the swimming-pool (with broken outline as well) and visitors will enter the center via the bridge getting inside the dark grey metal box of the portal, cut into "sugar" volume of the atrium.
