Resort on the Kama River

Studio:
WOWHAUS

Wowhaus has developed a project for the reconstruction of Korabelnaya Roshcha (“Mast Grove”), a wellness resort located on the banks of the Kama River.

The resort sits in a pine forest near Nizhnekamsk, a city about 240 kilometers east of Kazan. The client, the company Sibur, set the task of transforming the outdated Soviet-era complex into a modern center for health and leisure.

This region is famous for its picturesque landscapes. It is the birthplace of the artist Ivan Shishkin (1832-1898), whose sketches and studies of the Tatar forests and meadows later inspired his celebrated paintings “Morning in a Pine Forest” and “Oak Grove”.

The renewed resort will combine medical and wellness facilities with the comfort of a high-end resort hotel. It will welcome Sibur employees and their families – adults and children alike – for rest and rejuvenation.

The architects sought to integrate the buildings harmoniously into the natural setting. Thanks to panoramic windows, the pine forest becomes part of the interior. The use of natural materials and a soft, earthy color palette enhances the sense of connection with the surrounding woodland.

The façade design draws on associations with tree bark and the pine forest: glass-fiber concrete panels with textured relief evoke wood, while the jagged rhythm of verticals echoes the natural structure of stone. Layered, porous, and rough surfaces emphasize the organic character of the architecture.

The seven-story complex will include residential and medical units, a spa area, a swimming pool, and even a library. All these functions are united within a central atrium – the main hub of the complex – ensuring convenient circulation and close interconnection between all zones.

The project was developed in close collaboration with the resort’s management, which made it possible to account for both visitors’ needs and the technical requirements of specialists.

The key idea behind Wowhaus’s concept is to move away from the stereotypical image of a “Soviet sanatorium” toward the aesthetic of a contemporary, high-class resort. The result is an architectural ensemble where care for health is combined with comfort, and nature becomes not merely a backdrop, but an integral part of the architectural space.
