The Old City of Aleppo, a World Heritage Site, is one of the oldest historical cities, dating back to the third millennium BC. It is famous for its citadel and is distinguished by its Islamic character, including its mosques, markets, and caravanserais. The city also houses several archaeological and historical museums. However, these monuments were the greatest victims of the war in Syria, subjected to brutal bombing and destruction. Aleppo suffered extensive damage during the previous stages as a result of the heavy bombardment during the period when opposition forces controlled parts of the city, particularly the eastern parts and large parts of the old city. This prompted UNESCO to place Aleppo on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger in 2013.

However, in 2016, regime forces were able to fully control Aleppo after bloody battles and shelling that caused extensive damage to the city's cultural heritage, destroying large parts of the city's markets, historic buildings, and museums. The Citadel of Aleppo was also damaged. It also affected various economic, social, demographic and urban fields... For the successful planning and preparation for the reconstruction process, it is necessary to be familiar with the historical theoretical framework of this ancient city, the general concept of reconstruction, the mechanism for assessing damages of various types and levels, and the importance of benefiting from the strategies of global reconstruction projects through an analytical and evaluative study and taking lessons from the negatives and positives to avoid their recurrence, and translating them into practical ideas according to multiple axes that can be applied to the case studied, with the aim of ultimately arriving at results and recommendations that constitute the nucleus and foundation for any institution or entity concerned with reconstruction before starting to develop strategies and policies for various sectors to avoid obstacles and delays in the reconstruction of the city of Aleppo.
